Our free tour of the Prado neighborhood begins at the corner of Avenida Dr. Luis Alberto de Herrera and Avenida Millán. Once everyone's together, we'll set off on a route through this fascinating neighborhood, rich in flora, fauna, and history well worth discovering. Ready?
First, we'll travel back in time as we admire Castillo Soneira, a mysterious 19th-century fortress built in Neo-Gothic style. Here, we'll trace the city's development from its founding, as well as the rich cultural heritage of Montevideo, shaped by the Italian, Spanish, French, and Portuguese communities that once called it home.
Next, we'll wander through the residential streets and grand houses of Prado until we reach the Hotel del Prado, a tea salon that was once a favorite haunt of local and international aristocracy. Even King Charles of England paid it a visit!
We'll then continue along the route, taking in the forests and gardens of Prado before stepping into the Rosaleda del Prado, a true paradise for botany lovers. Inaugurated in 1912, this garden is dedicated to the memory of Uruguayan poet Juana de Ibarbourou.
After exploring this colorful space, we'll head to the Atilio Lombardo Botanical Museum and Garden. Did you know it's the only botanical garden in Uruguay? We'll learn all about the native flora and the city's population history, and to round off this part of the visit, we'll uncover some of the most fascinating mythological stories from Uruguayan folklore.
Finally, we'll make our way to the Iglesia de las Carmelitas, a Neo-Gothic church that stands as a true emblem of the city thanks to its historical importance.
We'll wrap up this free tour of the Prado neighborhood back at the starting point, 2.5 hours later.
